Aircraft wheel are important component of landing gear. Landing gear wheel support aircraft during taxi, takeoff and landing operations. Aircraft landing gear wheel subjected to severe stresses and impacts especially at landing, such heavy loads and strain causes tire blowing or separating from wheel rim .The thrown tire which are separated from wheel rim causes damage to an aircraft and aircraft goes out of balance which makes an aircraft hard to control.
The older aircraft were uses single piece wheel rim. The single piece wheel rim was enough strong for an older aircraft. Due less weight and speed of an older aircraft single piece wheel rim had short flange which positivity retain the tire in wheel rim and had sufficient area for tire stretching. The short flange of single piece wheel rim allow easy mounting and demounting of tire.
Due increase in weight and speed of modern aircraft, wheel tire made stiffer to absorb the forces of landing without blowing or separating from rim. The use of single piece wheel rim in modern aircraft is not possible because short flange and area of wheel rim. Modern aircraft uses wide chord tire and usually inflated with high pressure , this varies according to aircraft weight and speed. The use of single piece wheel rim in modern aircraft cause separation of tire from wheel rim because single piece wheel rim doesn't have sufficient flange size to retain tire and sustain tire pressurization loads.
Modern aircraft uses large flange size and greater area wheel rim which allow better retention of tire, tire stretching and sufficient strong to take tire pressurization loads. Due large size of wheel rim flange mounting and demounting of tire is difficult. Thus , to allow easy mounting and demounting of tire wheel rim are divided into two half.
Wheel blow out protection against heat provided by thermal fuse. When wheel temperature increased beyond threshold value thermal fuse will melt and air escape from wheel. In deflated wheel condition the total weight of an aircraft act on wheel rim, the load of wheel rim on tire strong enough to cut the tire. To prevent such cutting action of wheel rim , wheel rim peripheral portion reinforced and designed square flat surface. When tire in deflated condition, these reinforced flat surface on wheel rim presses the side wall of tire against the ground and prevent tire cutting.
